The NFL Lockout is finally coming to an end.
The owners approved a new Collective Bargaining Agreement last night and, after some initial concern that the players would reject the proposal, it looks like the NFL Players Association will accept the new CBA after they recertify their union and negotiaite a few items (such as benefits and drug testing).
The new CBA, barring any significant last minute changes, will look like this. I am not an economist or labor lawyer so it's hard to determine which side got the better of the deal.
The real winners are the fans who can schedule their fantasy drafts and plan out their Sundays now that football looks like its back...
Yes, I still want the Patriots to sign Randy Moss once the lockout ends so that Tom Brady has a deep threat.
I also would like to see the Pats sign Mathias Kiwanuka to bolster their pass rush and take a chance on Mark Herzlich...
The Celtics have lost Lawrence Frank, Doc Rivers' top assistant coach and the team's defensive coordinator, to the Detroit Pistons. This comes a year after the Celtics lost Tom Thibodeau to the Bulls (where he won the NBA's Coach of the Year) so Rivers will once again be looking for a top assistant.
I had the pleasure of attending a coaching clinic held by Tommy Amaker at Harvard that Frank was the keynote speaker at this past November. Frank's defensive lecture opened my eyes up to the complexities of coordinating an NBA defense but he simplified it enough so that the high school and college coaches in attendance could adapt his principles into their system.
The clinic also showed me that Frank has the communication skills necessary to succeed in the NBA as a head coach. After a wonderful introduction by Amaker that included mention of his 13-game winning streak at the start of his head coaching stint with the New Jersey Nets in 2004, Frank pointed out that he was fired by the Nets after starting 0-16 in the 2009 season. He also refused to take too much credit for the success of the Celtics defense , attributing it instead to the All-Star talents of Rajon Rondo, Kevin Garnett, Paul Pierce, and Ray Allen.
While my formative years in the late 1980's and early 1990's taught me to hate the Pistons, I hope Frank finds success in his new job...
As for Frank's potential successor, the Celtics nearly landed Hall of Famer Larry Brown before the 2007 season and it would be a major coup for Rivers to add him to the staff now...
Enjoy John Lackey tonight...
