The World Series is over and for the first time since moving from New York to San Francisco, the Giants are the kings of the baseball universe. The last time the Giants won the World Series in 1954, Willie Mays was a young centerfielder in the Polo Grounds, Richard Nixon was the handsome and youthful Vice-President, and Brett Favre was sending pictures of his junk to young women via the telegraph.
All kidding aside, Tim Lincecum is now on the short list of pitchers that you would cut off a finger to have pitching for your team and he is joined by other young starters Matt Cain and Madison Bumgarner and lights out closer Brian Wilson. The lineup doesn't have too many stars but young catcher Buster Posey would be my bet to be this generations version of Derek Jeter and unheralded hitters like Freddy Sanchez, Edgar Renteria and Cody Ross consistently came through with clutch hits.
In defeating the Rangers, the Giants overcame the feel good stories of Josh Hamilton and Cliff Lee. Most neutral viewers were pulling for the redemption tale of Hamilton to culminate with a World Series and for Lee to continue pitching like Sandy Koufax.
None of that matters now and San Francisco can finally celebrate a World Series championship.
