This blog post was originally going to be titled "In Belichick We Trust." I mean, it's pretty hard to doubt a guy with three Super Bowl rings and about 10,000 NFL victories under his belt. Well, I guess there are a few people out there who still think Belichick is a terrible coach.
The leader of that pack of idiots would be Ron Borges, columnist of the Boston Herald. On the morning of Super Bowl XXXVI, Borges wrote a column predicting that Belichick and the Patriots would lose to the Rams by a razor-thin margin of 73-0. Of course, the Patriots won that game, 20-17. Borges has never admitted his mistake and has done nothing but attack Belichick's leadership of the Patriots in spite of all the success he has enjoyed in New England.
It was less than four weeks ago that the then 3-1 Patriots, coming off of a huge win over the Dolphins on Monday Night Football, traded star wide receiver Randy Moss to the Vikings for a 2011 third-round draft pick. Borges once again called out Belichick in a column titled "Randy Moss Trade Another Blown Call By Belichick." Borges was not the only so-called expert to hammer Belichick over the deal but with his long history of criticism of the Patriots head coach, it was no surprise that his column included a line that called Belichick a "gym teacher with better jewelery."
Well, four week later the Patriots stand at the top of the NFL with a 6-1 record after a 28-18 win over Moss and the Vikings. On top of that, the hot news of this afternoon is that the Vikings are going to cut ties with Moss and place him on waivers (it is not official yet and there are rumors swirling this move does not have the approval of the entire Minnesota organization so stay tuned).
Borges will somehow turn this into a negative for the Patriots and place the blame on Belichick. Maybe it will be Belichick's fault that Moss will land with an AFC rival such as the Chiefs or Steelers. Or perhaps the mistake will be that Belichick did not make an attempt to re-sign Moss now that he is (almost) free.
Whatever it is, Patriots fans can rest easy at night because it is Bill Belichick - and not that D.B. Ron Borges - who is in charge of our football team.
