Red Sox vs. Yankees (September 24, 2011)

Red Sox (88-68) at New York Yankees (91-65)

SP - Jon Lester (15-8, 3.15) vs. Freddy Garcia(11-8, 3.77)

*** Red Sox Magic Number to Clinch a Playoff Spot - 4 ***

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Carl Crawford, LF
3. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
4. David Ortiz, DH
5. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
6. Mike Aviles, 3B
7. Marco Scutaro, SS
8. Josh Reddick, RF
9. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C

Three Strikes:

1. From the "Good News Department," Jon Lester has a career record of 6-1 with a 2.67 ERA in nine career starts in New York.

2. I like Terry Francona's creativity with today's lineup - moving Crawford up to second, sliding Pedroia into the three-hole, and dropping Gonzalez to fifth - because with all the injuries the Red Sox are dealing with his only option is to shuffle bodies.

Despite the drop from third to fifth, Adrian Gonzalez still has the opportunity to lead his team to the Wild Card and win th MVP.

3. PLAYOFF RACE: The Rays (2.5 games behind the Red Sox) host the Blue Jays and the Angels (3.5 games behind the Red Sox) host the A's.  Both teams lost last night so the Red Sox gained some distance despite not playing due to the rain in New York.

A win today would put the Red Sox in a position to possibly clinch the Wild Card in New York on Sunday during their doubleheader.
