Red Sox vs. Orioles (July 19, 2011)

Red Sox (58-36) @ Baltimore Orioles (38-55)

SP - Kyle Weiland (0-0, 13.50) vs. Jeremy Guthrie (3-13, 4.45)

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
5. Josh Reddick, LF
6. Carl Crawford, DH
7. Jarrod Saltalamacchia, C
8. J.D. Drew, RF
9. Marco Scutaro, SS

Three Strikes:

1. Kyle Weiland's first start was not what he had hoped it would be as he was ejected for hitting Vladimir Guerrero in the fifth inning.  He was the first player in Red Sox history to be ejected in his major league debut.

The injury concerns for the Red Sox pitching staff make this an important start for Weiland.  With the power of their lineup and their successful bullpen, the Red Sox just need a quality start from Weiland to give them an opportunity to win.

2. Nice move by Terry Francona to use Carl Crawford as the DH in his second game back from a trip to the disabled list for a pulled hamstring.

Crawford went 2-for-5 with an RBI and two runs scored last night and his leg looked completely healthy when he scored from first base on Darnell McDonald's eighth inning double.

With David Ortiz serving the second of a three game suspension, resting Crawford's legs while keeping him in the lineup is a good move.

3. Back in April, catcher was a position of weakness for the Red Sox.

While the combined production of Jarrod Saltalamacchia (.247 BA, 7 HR, 25 RBI, .758 OPS in 59 games) and Jason Varitek (.241/5/18/.741) will not remind anyone of Mike Piazza for the 2000 Mets (.324/38/113/1.012), they have stabilized the position and have helped the Red Sox offense take off these last few months.
