Brandon Spikes, a second round pick of the Patriots in 2010 out of Florida, is making news this week because of a sex tape that has appeared on the internet.
While there is a chance that NFL commissioner Roger Goodell could impose disciplinary action against Spikes, this episode should be nothing more than a minor footnote in what could be a very successful career.
As you can see in the highlight tape, Spikes has a way of finding the football and making big plays. A three-year starter at Florida, Spikes contributed to two BCS National Championship teams and was a three-time First Team All-SEC performer as well as a two-time First Team All-American at middle linebacker.
Spikes slipped to the second round of the Draft mostly because of a mediocre 5.0-second 40-yard dash time. However, as we have seen in the preseason, Spikes' football instincts make up for his perceived lack of speed. Teaming with rising star Jerod Mayo in the middle of Bill Belichick's 3-4 defense, Spikes should make life hell on opposing running backs.
The Patriots have plenty of questions to answer about how they will get after opposing quarterbacks and how they will slow down elite receivers but having a foundation built on 'backers like Spikes and Mayo gives the Patriots hope for the immediate and long term future.
