The NFL has been going for a few weeks and the college guys have started as well but the real start to the football season (at least in Massachusetts) took place today when thousands of young men put on the pads for the first day of practice.
Massachusetts may not be a football hotbed like Texas, Florida, or Ohio but don't try and explain that to the countless high school players who will find glory and disappointment on Friday nights and Saturday afternoons this fall.
I know that the video of Kenny Chesney's new song "The Boys of Fall" is a little long but it is worth the time it takes to watch. This is the first year since 2004 that I will not be coaching high school football and I am going to miss it dearly. This song almost got me to ignore my responsibilities that kept me off the sideline and return as a volunteer ... it is that good.
I wish every team, every player, and every coach the best of luck this season. I am going to miss the dog days of August and the bitter cold of November and the great feeling of coming home from the Thanksgiving Day game to a huge family dinner. Football season cannot be compared to anything else and only the brave ones who endure it know what that means. Chesney's video gets that idea across to the viewer but until you are in the trenches next to your friends, going up against your rivals, you have no real sense of how special it is to be a high school football player.
Enjoy it gentleman, every single second.
