Have the Clicker in One Hand and a Beer in the Other
What a weekend to sit in the recliner and have the 46" flatscreen turned on if you are a sports fan.
College football is in the spotlight. The major bowl games have started and fans had quite the New Year's Day. Penn State survived against LSU in the rain on a ripped up field in the Capital One Bowl. Florida State sent Bobby Bowden out on a high note with a win over West Virginia in the Gator Bowl. Ohio State saved the Big 10's reputation against Oregon in the Rose Bowl. Tim Tebow and (possibly) Urban Meyer ended their great careers at Florida with a convincing beating of Cincinnati in the Sugar Bowl.
The NHL also jumps into the picture on New Year's Day, with the third annual "Winter Classic." This year's game was played in my backyad at Fenway Park between the Bruins and Flyers. The Bruins scored a late goal to force overtime and lit the lamp a few minutes into the extra period for a dramatic victory.
NBC did a great job of seizing the attention on hockey by announcing the USA Olympic Hockey team live after the game. Bruins goalie Tim Thomas was the last player introduced and he skated around the rink to the chorus of cheers being rained down by his hometown fans in a Norman Rockwell moment.
If all that isn't enough for you, there have been a handful of exciting college basketball games on as well. New Year's Eve featured a mini-marathon of college hoops on ESPN2 and CBS has a great doubleheader on today, featuring Illinois-Gonzaga and Kentucky-Louisville. If you have not yet seen Kentucky freshman phenom John Wall, make sure to flip the channel to CBS at 3:30 today.
As a new year and new decade begin, the sports fans across the country have been treated to an exceptional weekend of games.
