10th Anniversary Of Varitek And A-Rod Fight
In the midst of a disappointing baseball summer in New England, Red Sox fans need to find ways to entertain themselves.
July 24 is an easy day to do so.
Ten years ago today, Jason Varitek planted his glove hand into Alex Rodriguez' face as A-Rod was barking at Bronson Arroyo after being hit by a pitch. The ensuing brawl and the walk-off home run by Bill Mueller off of Mariano Rivera later in the day made for a memorable Red Sox win.
A week later, the team consumated a three-way trade that sent Nomar Garciaparra to the Cubs and added Orlando Cabrera and Doug Mientkiewicz to the Red Sox. A few months later, the team won its first World Series since 1918.
The Varitek-A-Rod brawl is often mistakenly given credit for the turnaround moment of the 2004 Red Sox. Despite it not being a transitional moment, it is a great memory from a historic season and it's an image that Boston's baseball fans will never forget.
