Red Sox v. Rays (May 23, 2014)

Boston Red Sox (20-26) v. Tampa Bay Rays (20-28)
Tropicana Field

SP - John Lackey (5-3, 4.01) v. Chris Archer (3-2, 4.59)

1. Holt, 3B
2. Bogaerts, SS
3. Pedroia, 2B
4. Ortiz, DH
5. Napoli, 1B
6. Pierzynski, C
7. Victorino, RF
8. Sizemore, LF
9. Bradley, CF

Note:

The Red Sox signing of Stephen Drew makes sense in the short term - the team needed to improve its defense at shortstop and could use an upgrade to its lineup - but in the long term it makes no sense because it will stunt Xander Bogaerts development as a shortstop.

I'd like to see the Red Sox play Bogaerts at shortstop and move Drew to third but I doubt that's part of the plan.  Drew is a Scott Boras client on the verge of free agency, he's not likely to move his position.

I'd also like to see the Red Sox admit 2014 might be a lost cause and just keep Bogaerts at shortstop and let him learn the position.  Trade Drew off in a couple of weeks to the Yankees (as Derek Jeter insurance), flip Grady Sizemore to a team in need of a fourth outfielder and left handed bat off the bench, and find homes for any other veteran while giving their top prospects a taste of life in the big leagues as the team prepares for its next run of continued success.
