In one of his NBA reader mailbags on Grantland, Bill Simmons lists the Celtics as a favorite to land Timberwolves forward Kevin Love if he is traded this summer.
So maybe I wasn't crazy in thinking the Celtics could add Love and his averages of 26 points and 13 rebounds a game to their roster.
With a war chest of first round picks, Danny Ainge could put together a package of draft picks and expiring contracts to entice Minnesota to give up Love just like when he acquired Kevin Garnett from the North Star State in 2007. With Love set to become a free agent after next season, the time will be right for the T-Wolves to get value for their franchise player this summer.
Chad Finn of the Boston Globe did a nice job of pointing out that Love is nowhere near the defensive presence that Garnett was when he came to Boston, which help accounts for his high rebounding averages, but Love is a legitimate star player who would form a championship foundation with the Celtics along with Rajon Rondo (who I think would choose to stay in Boston when he becomes a free agent after 2015 to play with Love).
Landing a player like Love, and keeping Rondo, would get the Celtics back into the championship picture in the NBA and would make the team an attractive option to free agents looking for a chance to win just like when Ainge teamed up Paul Pierce with Garnett and Ray Allen seven years ago.
