Bruins Lose Out On Iginla

Normally if the Bruins gave up a 2 goal lead at home to the Canadiens before ultimately losing in a shootout (which cost them first place in the Northeast Division) would be considered an apocalyptic catastrophe.

The only thing saving Claude Julien's squad from the firing squad last night was the news that the team was on the verge of acquiring Jarome Igilna from Calgary for two prospects and a draft pick.  Igilna's scoring punch - 525 career goals, including 9 in 31 games for a Flames team that is one of the worst in the NHL - is just what the Bruins needed to overcome the Pittsburgh Penguins to win the Eastern Conference and win the Stanley Cup.

Well, it's time to summon the sounds of sarcastic trombones because the Bruins not only lost to the Canadiens but they lost out on Igilna as well.

The Penguins, already one of the most talented teams in the NHL, swooped in over night and dealt for Igilna.  This is the third major move for the Penguins in the last few days as they have already dealt for Brenden Morrow and Douglas Murray to bolster themselves for a run at Lord Stanley's Cup.

All the moves by the Penguins give them a major edge over their competition on paper but it doesn't mean the Bruins have no shot at a championship this season.  The core of this Bruins team was responsible for winning the Cup in 2011 and with some improved play by their key players and a few moves to strenghten the depth of the roster by Peter Chiarelli and Cam Neely - like when they added Chris Kelly and Rich Peverley prior to their Cup run in 2011 - there is no reason they cannot mount a serious challenge for the Cup in 2013.
