A Busy Friday In Foxboro

Bill Belichick and the Patriots have let the dust settle from the first two days of NFL free agency and are now starting to bring in free agents for visits and adding players to their roster.

After signing Danny Amendola to replace the departed Wes Welker at receiver, the Patriots also added Donald Jones.  Along with Amendola and Jones, the Patriots also have Brandon Lloyd under contract (although he has been mentioned as a candidate to be released) at receiver and brought in restricted free agent Emmanuel Sanders from the Steelers for a visit today.  Signing Sanders would cost the Patriots a third round draft pick.

The Patriots also agreed to a contract with Leon Washington, formerly of the Seahawks and Jets, which provides competition at kick returner (with Jeff Demps) and as a "third down" running back.  With Danny Woodhead leaving as a free agent for San Diego, he is another option at running back when the Patriots go to their "hurry up" offense.

The most encouraging news of the day is that the team is hosting three veteran defensive players today.  Defensive ends John Abraham and Dwight Freeney as well as safety Adrian Wilson are all meeting with Belichick and his staff today.  The Patriots definitely need to improve against the pass - and they also announced that free agent Kyle Arrington has re-signed with the team - and if they can add one (or both) veteran sack masters and a safety like Wilson the defense will look, on paper, a lot better than the one that was shredded by Joe Flacco and the Ravens a few weeks ago in the AFC Championship Game.
