Tomorrow night when Tom Brady takes the field at Lucas Oil Stadium in Indianapolis against the Giants, he won't just be playing to win the Super Bowl for the Patriots. He will also be playing to cement his legacy as the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
Brady is already in the discussion, there's no doubt about that. He already has three Super Bowl rings, two Super Bowl MVP trophies, and has been voetd NFL MVP two times. But a win tomorrow elevates him to the top of the list.
Winning Super Bowl XLVI would tie Brady with Joe Montana and Terry Bradshaw as the only quarterbacks with four Lombadi Trophies on their resume. It would also be his seventeenth career postseason victory which would be an NFL record.
Brady has always been a player motivated by the need to prove to people that he is great. Coming to the Patriots as the 199th overall pick in the 2000 draft, winning the job when Drew Bledsoe got trucked by Mo Lewis, hearing critics say the Patriots defense was responsible for victories in Super Bowls XXXVI, XXXVIII, and XXXIX, hearing critics say Peyton Manning was the better quarterback, hearing critics say he was rattled by the Giants defense in Super Bowl XLII, and then hearing that Aaron Rodgers and Drew Brees were better quarterbacks have all fueled Brady's desire to be great.
A win tomorrow and there is no doubting that Tom Brady is the greatest quarterback in NFL history.
