The Rays and Angels are both breathing down the Red Sox neck. The sky is falling on Yawkey Way and if I didn't know any better I would think that it is 1978. The pitching sucks, the bats can't produce runs when they need to, and the defense has been atrocious.
All that and I still think the Red Sox will be in the ALCS.
Huh?
I think the Sox will survive the last six games and stumble into the playoffs as the A.L. Wild Card team. In the ALDS the bats will come to life and they will defeat either the Tigers or Rangers before falling to the Yankees in the ALCS.
How's that for optimism...
The Red Sox will venture into the Bronx this weekend, hoping to take 2-of-3 from the Yankees. The Sox will (thankfully) miss CC Sabathia as the Yankees will turn to Freddy Garcia, A.J. Burnett, and Ivan Nova. Jon Lester and Tim Wakefield will start the first two games for the Red Sox with the starter for Sunday still a mystery.
The state of the starting rotation has become so bad that Theo Epstein reportedly tried to pull off a deal for Mets pitcher Chris Capuano (11-12, 4.47) to take the mound on Sunday.
Not exactly a vote of confidence for Erik Bedard and John Lackey...
Just in case their is a two-way tie for the Wild Card after 162 games, the Red Sox would host the Angels, Tampa would host the Red Sox, and Tampa would likely host the Angels...
The Magic Number is 5...
