Red Sox vs. Twins (May 9, 2011)

Minnesota Twins (12-20) @ Red Sox (16-18)

SP - Josh Beckett (2-1, 2.35) vs. Nick Blackburn (2-4, 4.41)

1. Jacoby Ellsbury, CF
2. Dustin Pedroia, 2B
3. Adrian Gonzalez, 1B
4. Kevin Youkilis, 3B
5. David Ortiz, DH
6. J.D. Drew, RF
7. Jed Lowrie, SS
8. Carl Crawford, LF
9. Jason Varitek, C

Three Strikes:

1. It seems crazy to be paying $20-million for a guy to be hitting eighth but the numbers show that Carl Crawford is significantly better in that spot (.298 average) than anywhere else in the lineup (.160).

Crawford won't stay in that position all year but it wouldn't hurt to consider having such a dynamic offensive player at the bottom of the order.

2. Red Sox Nation read and heard so much about how Adrian Gonzalez' swing was made for Fenway Park's Green Monster and this homestand has proven that to be true.

Watching Gonzalez sit back and drive the ball off or over the Monster is as close as this generation of Red Sox fans will come to watching Ted Williams.

3. Entering tonight, the Red Sox only trail the Yankees and Rays by four games in the A.L. East.  The bad start is in the rearview mirror and I have no doubt that the Sox will be on top of the division by the All-Star break.
