ESPN Needs The Eck

Fans of ESPN's Sunday Night Baseball telecast will have to get acquainted with a new broadcast crew next season because after 21 years, the network is breaking up the duo of Jon Miller and Joe Morgan.

I have mixed feelings on this topic. On one hand, I have always enjoyed Miller's ability to call the play-by-play and keep the viewers informed while not trying to make the broadcast about him. On the other hand, I will definitely not miss the confusing rants of Morgan, who failed to ever teach me something about the game that I was not already aware of, which is his job as the color commentator.

I'm not sure who ESPN will go after to replace Miller and Morgan. If they were to ask me - and my phone has not rang yet - I would give my endorsement to Hall of Fame closer and part-time Red Sox analyst Dennis Eckersley.

The Eck provides great insight into the game and adds in a bit of folksy language (such using "cheese" to describe a fastball). He did a great job of filling in for Jerry Remy on the NESN broadcasts of Red Sox games in 2009 and has done some national work with TBS. It would be a nice move for ESPN to add Eckersley.
