End of 2020 Random Thoughts (December 22, 2020)

The local sports media take in Boston that Bill Belichick is coaching for his job in 2021 is ridiculous.

Professional sports is certainly a results driven industry, but if anyone has earned time to rebuild it is Belichick.

Too many people in these parts think that Patriots history coincided with the rise of Tom Brady.  They forget that for most of the franchise's first 40 years of existence that the Patriots were a dumpster fire along the lines of the 2020 Jets.

Belichick did not just bring unparalleled success to the Patriots, he instilled a winning culture and a sense of stability that they never knew before.

After 20 years - 20 FUCKING YEARS - of winning Division, Conference, and Super Bowl championships, I think he has more than earned the opportunity to build another contender.

It's sad that so many of the talking heads on WEEI and The Sports Hub have nothing else intelligent to offer so they go with the "Fire Belichick" routine.

Luckily, Robert Kraft knows better and knows he is lucky to have Belichick to lead the Patriots into the 2020's.

One (or two) bad seasons does not erase the 17 AFC East Championships, 13 AFC Championship Game appearances, 9 AFC Championships, and 6 Super Bowl Championships.

Sources say that MLB is contemplating a Memorial Day through November schedule for 2021.

The goal is obviously to get fans in the seats by early Summer, as MLB hopes to make up at least some of their lost revenue.

The NBA season opens tonight.

Put me down for the Lakers to beat the Bucks in the Finals.  Giannis will beat LeBron for the regular season MVP, but James will capture a second straight championship.

The Celtics will struggle early, but Jayson Tatum and Jaylen Brown will figure out their roles as undisputed team leaders, Kemba Walker will give their bench a boost when he returns, and rookie guards Aaron Nesmith and Payton Pritchard will make enough 3's to make the Celtics a threat come playoff time.  It will not be enough in 2021, but this is a legitimate championship contender come 2022.

James Harden will go the 76ers, where he will again fail to reach the Finals.  The Nets will demonstrate flashes of brilliance but Kyrie will find a way to derail their title hopes.  The Nuggets and Suns will be worth staying up late to watch on the East Coast, but neither can stop the Lakers.

Another bad take in Boston is that Brad Stevens is on the hot seat.

Just further proof that the sports media in this city knows little about the games and teams that they cover.

Adios 2020.  Bring on the vaccine.
